The American cockroach is the largest of the common cockroaches. It occurs mostly in commercial buildings and rarely homes throughout Florida. Indoors they are found anywhere food is being prepared or served  The American cockroach is second only to the German cockroach in abundance.

Outdoors, American cockroaches are found in moist shady areas such as hollow trees, wood piles, and mulch.  While these cockroaches normally dwell outside, they will wander indoors to search for food and water or to avoid extreme weather conditions.
