There are three species of hornets found in Florida, Eastern Yellowjacket, Southern Yellowjacket and the Baldfaced Hornet. They all live in large colonies in nests built in trees or underground. These colonies can consist of hundreds to even thousands of individuals. Unlike bees that can sting only once, then die, the hornets and other wasps can sting many times. If one individual is hurt, it can release an “alarm pheromone” which results in very aggressive, defensive behavior from the others in the colony. Normally these insects are beneficial in that they kill and consume many bad insects. In addition to other insects they are attracted to sugar and rotting fruit. It is important to keep trash cans tightly closed, pickup rotting fruit on the ground and keep sweet drinks covered. Unfortunately hornets and wasps sometime choose to make their home near people where there are likely to be unpleasant interactions.
Because of the aggressive nature of these insects when disturbed or hurt, it is advisable to call a professional to aid in their safe elimination from the area. It is never a good idea for a non7professional to try to dig up or knock down a hornet nest. Give Certified Pest Control a call at (386) 761-3138 for assistance.
